Who is, then, the total man? Neither physical nor physiological nor psychological, nor historical, nor exclusively and unilaterally economic or social. He is all that, and more than the sum of these elements or aspects. He is their unity, their totality, their becoming. Man is defined by his knowledge, his sciences, by that which the sciences discover; but the sciences themselves are determined by man acting and thinking. While the old scientism is content either to privilege abusively one or other science and to conceive everything physically, for example, or mathematically or biologically, or to envisage a sum of the results acquired by the various sciences, dialectical materialism puts man in the center of its preoccupations…
