Religious diversity

Chad Meister

pp. 3-18

The religions of the world are multifarious. As the awareness of the plurality and diversity of religious beliefs expands on a global scale, the importance of philosophical reflection on them—regarding both their own unique belief structures and the relationships among the religions—increases. The rise of comparative religion and comparative theology has brought about a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the different religious traditions, and this in turn has made it more difficult to be dismissive of those from traditions other than one's own, or of religion altogether. But it has also brought to the fore recognition of the many ways the varying traditions are in conflict, sometimes at the deepest levels, with respect to the nature of Ultimate Reality and our relation to it. How are we to think about this diversity and disagreement? Before exploring various options, it is important to elucidate how the term "religion" will be used in this context.
