Introduction

Guttorm Fløistad

pp. 3-10

Language has a remarkable history in our culture. This history is recorded differently by different disciplines. Philosophy of language tells us one story, linguistics another, and what may be called theology of language a third. Additionally one may well speak of a history of ordinary or natural language itself. It changes, due to changing internal linguistic elements on the one hand, and external social, political, and other factors on the other.
