(2014) Modern architecture in theatre, Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan.
Autant and Lara's theatre for literary readings separated word and image in multiple spatial layers that defined positions for visual tableaux, readers, commentators, and spectators, all of whom moved spontaneously between layers. Multiple box stages in the theatre design recall medieval "mansions' that held scenes from scripture for spectators who walked and talked among them. The experience of moving between architectural frames, at times performing, then watching others perform, and of perching on the threshold recalls urban life in the many rooms of the city. The Theatre of the Book comments on display spaces in the city and proposes open layers of interactive space in between detached images (like paintings in a museum) and spontaneous conversation, layers essential to a fully engaged society.
